Prepare the pattern before adding heat

Finish every bead placement and compare the board with your pattern one final time. A misplaced bead is easy to move now and difficult to repair after fusing.

Work on a stable, heat-safe surface with good light. Keep children and loose materials away from the iron, and ask an adult to handle the hot tool when younger makers are involved.

  • Ironing paper or reusable parchment made for fuse beads
  • A dry household iron with steam switched off
  • A flat, heat-safe surface and a heavy book for cooling

Use moderate heat and continuous movement

Place the ironing paper flat over the beads. Start with the temperature recommended by your bead manufacturer; different plastics and irons behave differently, so there is no universal dial position.

Move the iron in small, overlapping circles without resting in one spot. Check frequently. The bead edges should begin to join while the center holes remain visible if you want a classic finish. Pressing harder does not replace patient, even movement.

Cool the piece flat

When the first side is evenly fused, leave the paper in place for a moment, then carefully lift the piece from the board according to the board maker's instructions. Put it on a flat surface and keep it under a heavy book while it cools.

For extra strength, some makers fuse the reverse side as well. Use lighter heat on the second side and cool the project flat again. Large multi-board projects are usually easier to manage in labeled sections before final assembly.

Fix common ironing problems

If one area is loose, cover it again and apply a short, controlled pass. If the piece curls, warm it gently under paper and cool it under weight. Severely flattened beads cannot be restored, so stop and inspect earlier rather than trying to finish in one long pass.

Common questions

Should fuse bead holes disappear completely?

They do not need to. Visible holes usually indicate a lighter classic finish; fully closed holes create a flatter surface. Consistency across the project matters more than choosing one style.

Why did my fuse bead project curl?

Curling usually comes from uneven heat or cooling without weight. Use continuous circular movement, work in short checks, and cool the piece flat under a heavy book.
